Among The Shoots Original Mixed Media Painting - Lisa Metcalfe_Just Makers

1 September - 11 October

When people think of Yorkshire art, they often picture sweeping landscapes and dramatic skies. This exhibition looks beyond those familiar scenes to reveal another side of Yorkshire art.

Beyond the Landscape celebrates colour, texture, form and imagination. Some works are rooted in the landscape, while others have no direct connection to place at all. Each offers a different way of seeing and responding to the world.

As the first Just Makers Exhibition, we invite you to take your time and discover the many ways Yorkshire artists are using abstraction to express ideas, materials, place and emotion.

Featured Artists

Mike Bentley Portrait

Mike Bentley

Mike Bentley is a traditional woodturner based near Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, with more than 40 years of experience working with wood.

Using locally sourced and reclaimed timber, Mike creates one of a kind pieces shaped by the natural grain, knots, burrs and other features within the wood. Each piece is individually turned and finished by hand, allowing the character of the original timber to remain an important part of the finished work.

Julie Bruce

Skipton based painter Julie Bruce uses colour, shape and design to transform familiar surroundings into abstract compositions. Her work for Beyond the Landscape takes inspiration from the canal boats of Skipton, drawing on their windows, chimneys, ropes, peeling paint and the everyday objects carried aboard.

Rather than reproducing what she sees, Julie combines these details with colour and imagination, allowing recognisable forms to develop into something less expected.

A woman with blonde hair tied back, wearing a magenta long-sleeve shirt, holds a paint brush in front of a white wall decorated with colorful abstract paintings.

Emma Butler

Emma Butler is an award-winning painter based in Holmfirth whose semi-abstract landscapes explore the experience of being immersed in the natural world.

Inspired by the Yorkshire Dales and Peak District, Emma works intuitively with mixed media, using bold colour and expressive marks rather than attempting to reproduce a landscape exactly as she sees it.

Hills, wild terrain and expansive skies are translated into energetic compositions that capture atmosphere, movement and her emotional response to place.

Felts By Hannah Profile Photo_Just Makers

Felts by Hannah

Hannah is a Yorkshire-based fibre artist creating colourful, textured work using second-hand and reclaimed wool.

Influenced by her Yorkshire roots and several years spent living in the Caribbean, her work brings together colour, texture and form. Hannah often allows the materials themselves to guide each piece as it develops.

A smiling woman with blonde hair stands in an art studio wearing a blue denim jacket over a white top with black polka dots and a paint-splattered cream apron. She is standing in front of a large colorful floral painting on a white wall, with smaller paintings hanging to her left.

Lisa Metcalfe

Lisa Metcalfe creates intuitive mixed media paintings inspired by colour, texture and the landscape around her. Working with acrylic paint, collage and other materials, she builds layers of colour, marks and subtle texture, allowing each painting to develop organically.

Her work moves beyond direct representation, using the landscape as a starting point for an expressive response to colour and place.

Red_Paper_House_Portrait_Just Makers

Red Paper House

Amy Hall is the artist and designer behind Red Paper House, creating bold wooden jewellery from her Yorkshire studio.

Inspired by nature, Amy combines hand drawn patterns, geometric forms and strong colour to create distinctive pieces from responsibly sourced birch wood. Each design is individually made and hand finished.
