A man wearing a black graphic hoodie stands in front of a wall covered with art prints and sketches, next to a large colorful cartoon print featuring a blue hooded figure and white skulls.

Custard4Gravy is the printmaking alter ego of Andy Mitchell. Working from a small garage studio at the bottom of his garden, Andy creates mainly linocut prints inspired by his love of nature and the great outdoors.

His work has a playful quality and doesn't take itself too seriously, with birds appearing frequently, although they're not always immediately obvious. Quite often, there's one hiding somewhere in the image.

Ideas begin in Andy's sketchbooks, which tend to fill up after long walks in the Yorkshire Dales, coastal holidays or simply watching a nature programme on TV. These drawings often find their way into his prints, sometimes much later, resulting in work rooted in the landscapes, wildlife and everyday encounters that surround him.

All of this makes Andy's work a particularly good fit for our Living World exhibition.
