Richard Burel

Born in France and now based between Yorkshire and Italy, Richard Burel creates richly layered cityscapes that sit somewhere between memory and imagination.

An elected member of the Bath Society of Artists since 2005, Richard has exhibited widely across the UK, France and Italy, including at London’s Mall Galleries. His work can now be found in collections around the world.

Inspired by cities such as London, Paris and New York, Richard’s paintings are full of colour, texture and movement. Using layers of paint, collage and printed elements, he captures the atmosphere and personality of a place rather than its exact reality. Familiar streets become slightly dreamlike, with tilted perspectives, hidden details and flashes of unexpected humour woven through each piece.

There is a wonderful sense of energy in his work. Architecture feels alive, walls seem to hold stories and every painting rewards a closer look. From bold colour palettes to small playful details, Richard’s pieces celebrate the beauty, chaos and character of urban life.
