Mike Bentley is a woodturner based just outside Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, and he's been working with wood for over 40 years. He specialises in creating one-of-a-kind pieces using locally sourced or reclaimed timber, preferring to opt for the gnarled, burred or ‘imperfect’ bits that others might pass by.
Mike loves letting the natural features of the wood guide the shape of each piece, revealing the hidden beauty within. Every item is then carefully hand-turned and finished with natural oils or waxes.
Mike's career first began as a teenager when he was making lace bobbins for his mum using a lathe attachment on a power drill. Placing a small advert in a craft magazine led him to getting orders from around the world, eventually funding his first proper lathe.
These days Mike has moved on from lace bobbins (after making over 20,000 of them!) and now focuses on creating truly unique pieces that celebrate the character and quirks of Yorkshire wood.
