Fiona Robertson originally trained in Fine Art but over time found her true passion in textiles. Her work is deeply inspired by the beauty and diversity of the surrounding landscape. From the shifting colours of the seasons to the play of light at different times of day, Fiona observes and records these changing elements through photography and sketchbooks before translating them into stitch.
Her fine art embroideries are characterised by rhythm, colour and texture. To create each piece, Fiona begins by layering hand-dyed scrim, hessian, silk fabrics and fibres to form the foundation of her composition. Using free-motion machine embroidery, she builds tone and movement, before adding hand stitching to bring depth and intricate detail. The result is a richly textured artwork, with each piece taking several weeks to complete.
Fiona’s work has been exhibited widely across the UK and is held in private collections in Europe, the United States, Canada and Australia.
Based in North Yorkshire, Fiona works from her studio in East Harlsey. In 2024, Fiona was proud to be awarded the People’s Choice Award at the North Yorkshire Open Studios Spring Exhibition.
