Join Yorkshire-based ink and watercolour artist Matty Burnham for an inspiring workshop at Just Makers.
During the workshop, you will be painting Newlands Church in the Lake District using ink and watercolour, a technique also known as “line and wash”. You will learn how to simplify a composition, create a sense of light and build depth within a painting.
The workshop is suitable for beginners, although participants should have some prior experience using watercolours and be comfortable with basic sketching.
The day is informal, supportive and friendly, with the small group size allowing for individual guidance and feedback throughout.
You are asked to please bring the following materials with you on the day:
Basic drawing materials
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Eraser
Paper
Good quality cold pressed or rough cotton watercolour paper is recommended, as this makes the techniques easier to achieve.
Example: Arches rough paper block.
Watercolours
Suggested colours include:
• French Ultramarine Blue
• Cerulean Blue
• Cadmium Red
• English Red (Light Red or Venetian Red)
• Yellow Ochre or Raw Sienna
• Burnt Umber
• Quinacridone Gold
• Cadmium Yellow
Participants do not need to have every colour listed. Suitable alternatives will work perfectly well.
A large mixing palette is also required.
Ink
Waterproof ink is essential for this workshop. Fine liner pens such as Micron Sakura or Uni Pin are reliable options. A dip pen with India ink can also be used.
Brushes
Any watercolour brushes that you are comfortable using will be suitable.
Other materials
• Water container
• Masking fluid
• Masking tape
• Kitchen roll
• Spray bottle
• White ink or white gouache
Please do get in touch if you have any questions about the above.
Small group. Led by the artist. Beginners welcome.

What to expect from a workshop
If you’re new to workshops or want to know how ours work, you’ll find a clear guide on the Just Makers blog:
Where are Workshops Held?
Unless otherwise stated, our workshops take place in the spacious, light-filled room above our shop in the Clock Tower at Ripley. It’s a lovely space that’s perfect for getting creative.
Please note that the workshop room is accessed via one flight of stairs. Toilet facilities are available on site.
What Do I Bring?
Just bring yourselves!
All materials will be provided unless we let you know otherwise.
We’ll have refreshments ready for you on arrival. If your workshop runs all day, please note that lunch isn’t provided. You’re welcome to bring a packed lunch or visit the tearoom or coffee shop in Ripley Castle Courtyard.
If your workshop is likely to get a bit messy, we recommend wearing something you don’t mind getting creative in!
Car Parking
You’re welcome to park in the car park next to Ripley Castle Courtyard — it’s just a short walk from our shop.
Parking is free for workshop attendees, but please let us know your car registration number when you arrive so we can make sure you’re covered for the day.
Cancellation Policy
We understand that sometimes plans change, and we’ll always do our best to be fair.
Please note the following terms for workshop cancellations:
- Cancellations made one calendar month or more before the workshop: You’ll receive a full refund.
- Between one month and 14 days before the workshop: We’ll issue a credit note for the full amount which you can use towards a future workshop.
- Cancellations less than 14 days in advance: We’ll do our best to fill your spot. If we’re able to, we’ll offer a transfer or credit note towards another workshop. If not, we’re sorry but we can’t offer a refund.
Gift vouchers
If you booked using a gift voucher, please note that we’re unable to offer cash refunds. However we’ll follow the same cancellation terms and issue a credit note where applicable.
If we cancel
If we ever need to cancel a workshop due to unforeseen circumstances, we’ll give you as much notice as possible and offer a full refund. Sadly we can’t accept responsibility for travel or other costs you may have incurred.
