Emma Butler is an award-winning painter based in Holmfirth, West Yorkshire, creating semi-abstract landscapes characterised by bold colour and expressive mark making.
Inspired by time spent in the Yorkshire Dales, the Peak District and other landscapes, Emma is interested in capturing the experience of a place rather than reproducing exactly what she sees. Undulating hills, wild terrain, expansive skies and the point where land and sky meet provide recurring starting points for her work.
Emma works intuitively with mixed media, taking observations and impressions gathered outdoors back into her studio. Colour plays a central role in her paintings, helping her convey the sense of joy, freedom and wonder she experiences when immersed in the landscape.
Emma has worked professionally as an artist and illustrator since 2001. She graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a first-class honours degree in Textiles and continued developing her practice while travelling internationally, including a period living in New Zealand. Now based in Holmfirth, she creates her paintings from her studio, and her work is held in private collections around the world.
Her career has included gallery representation and awards for her use of colour and her artwork.
